The daughter of Francis Keane O'Brien and Agnes (nee Hundelt) of St. Louis, MO died on Saturday September 16, 2017. She was preceded in death by her father and mother and older sister Mary Jane (nee O'Brien) DeForest (Roy) of Fairborn, OH. Shirley was born in St. Louis, MO and came to Dayton in 1955 to visit her sister in Fairborn. Here she met her future husband and they shortly married. The daughter of Francis Keane O'Brien and Agnes (nee Hundelt) of St. Louis, MO died on Saturday September 16, 2017. She was preceded in death by her father and mother and older sister Mary Jane (nee O'Brien) DeForest (Roy) of Fairborn, OH. Shirley was born in St. Louis, MO and came to Dayton in 1955 to visit her sister in Fairborn. Here she met her future husband and they shortly married. She had many interests and loved duplicate bridge. Here she joined the Miami Valley Bridge Club where she attained the rank of Bronze Master, playing in many local and distant tournaments. She was also vitally interested in genealogy and worked diligently in the pursuit of her German and Irish ancestors. As a result, she was successful in publishing 5 books on her forebears, three of which are registered in the US Library of Congress, leaving a memorable legacy for her relatives and descendants. She also loved animals and contributed significantly to the Humane Society, SISCA, and many other organizations fighting the abuse of animals. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Vladimir (Lud) Vukmir, a son Paul Vukmir (Melissa) of Dayton, two grandsons Patrick and Thomas Vukmir, a brother-in-law Andrija Vukmir (Hazel) of Red Wing, MN, a sister-in-law Georgeanne Vukmir of Hernando, FL, two nephews Miles Pavlovic of Las Vegas, NV and Billy Hensell (Wendy) of Pittsburgh, PA, a niece Marianne Hensell of Rutherford, NJ, cousins Mary Ann Hayden of St. Louis, MO and Wm. J. Hundelt Jr. (Joann) of Lenexa, KS and numerous other relatives and friends. Visitation will be 4-7 pm Tuesday September 19, 2017 at the Tobias Funeral Home Far Hills Chapel 5471 Far Hills Ave at Rahn Rd. Entombment in David's Mausoleum. Funeral Service will be 11 am Wednesday September 20, 2017 at David's Community Mausoleum Chapel. Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or various charities of your choice.
